Deadbeats compete for 'Hard Rock Calling' gig

By
April 26th, 2011

The Deadbeats have advanced in the Hard Rock Cafe's national battle of the bands and are now one step closer to performing at a huge music festival in the U.K. later this year.

The local rockers are one of 40 acts from around the country vying for one of four opening slots at "Hard Rock Calling 2011," a multi-day festival at Hyde Park in London, England that will attract thousands of fans and some of rock's biggest names, including Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks.

"We were just stoked to win it for our region … (and) that was my main goal from this whole experience," said the Deadbeats' Brett Robinson earlier this month when the news was first announced. "I just wanted to play the Hard Rock Waikiki. That place is pretty awesome. And then we won, so I'm pretty stoked."

Following regional battles at 68 different cities in 24 countries, a panel of judges that included musicians Steven Van Zandt and Pete Wentz, Live Nation vice president Toby Leighton-Pope, Hard Rock chief marketing officer John Galloway and radio exec Clare Baker chose the 40 finalists. Voting took place earlier this month online, and the final four finalists will be announced on Thursday; if the Deadbeats make it that far, they will need your help getting the votes necessary to serve as the opening act on the "Hard Rock Calling" main stage.

"I don't want to get my hopes up, but it will be great if people who don't even know us want to send a band from Hawaii to London," Robinson said. "I think the worst thing would be to get our hopes up and then it doesn't happen."

BAMP announces ‘Republik Music Fest’

By
April 13th, 2011

Any promoter with an ounce of common sense — or club kid with his or her eye on an ounce of liquor — will tell you that building a good buzz is important. Unless people are aware of what's going on, how will they be able to support it?

That's the strategy behind today's BAMP Project announcement of the lineup for the inaugural "Republik Music Festival" on June 11 at Kakaako Waterfront Park. The promoters have yet to open the doors on their new Kapiolani Boulevard concert venue/lounge, but will still push forward with a star-studded lineup of reggae and island music acts.

"We're establishing the branding for sure," BAMP/Republik co-owner Matty Hazelgrove said this morning. "It's a perfect opportunity for us to do this."

The first festival will feature headliners Steel Pulse (pictured above), plus the Dirty Heads and semi-regular Hawaii visitors Matisyahu and Rebelution. The Green and Maui-based rockers the Throwdowns will open the show.

"The 'Republik Music Festival' is going to be the big brother to the Republik," Hazelgrove continued. "And even though this lineup is pretty reggae-heavy, we'll always have elements of rock and other genres. It will be just like the Republik, where we're going to do all kinds of different music."

Tickets for the festival go on sale at 9 a.m. April 20 at all Local Motion stores on Oahu, Navy ITT and Coast Guard offices, the UH-Manoa Campus Center and online at www.groovetickets.com. General admission will set you back $39.50, with VIP tickets priced at $70 (includes dedicated bar service and portable restrooms, VIP area in front of stage and catered food from Wahoo's Fish Tacos.

It's teddy bear time once again on Oahu — Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii is back with its annual "Teddy Bear Round-Up" and family resource fair at Pearlridge Center's Uptown Center Court.

From 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. tomorrow, April 9, volunteers will be on hand to attempt to collect their goal of 10,000 teddy bears and other stuffed animals of all shapes, sizes and colors.

"The stuffed animals that are collected will be shared with children who have suffered," said Elsie Foster, the event's volunteer chairperson. "These stuffed animals provide children with happiness and comfort."

Along with the stuffed animal collection, volunteers will also be on hand to provide free family activities. Live entertainment is also planned.

Busta Rhymes skips out on Hawaii gig

By
April 8th, 2011

Star-Advertiser File / 2009

Busta Rhymes, right, and Spliff Star perform at LEVEL4 Nightclub in 2009.<

It's a classic example of how promoting concerts in Hawaii is like big game fishing — sometimes you bag that huge catch, and sometimes it gets away.

This weekend's big catch was Busta Rhymes at the Shack Waikiki. It's been a few years since he's been in town, and the veteran hip-hop star is reportedly working on his next album, "Extinction.Level.Event.2." In recent weeks, the Internet has been abuzz with leaks from his latest studio work, including tracks with Chris Brown and Marsha Ambrosius, plus a song from the vault that features the Notorious B.I.G.

After watching him perform at LEVEL4 back in 2009, it was a good bet the Shack would have been packed to capacity — and Busta would have probably delivered another inspired performance. Unfortunately, it looks like a bigger payday forced him to pull out of tonight's appearance.

According to multiple sources, the rapper has joined an all-star roster of U.S. hip-hop stars in Australia for Supafest 2011. He'll perform alongside the likes of T-Pain, Game, Nelly, Timbaland, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, and Keri Hilson in Sydney on April 9 and Perth on April 10, then stick around for another weekend of performances in Brisbane and Melbourne on April 16 and April 17, respectively.

A phone call to the Shack yesterday confirmed the cancellation, although concert promoter DJ Osna did not return a call requesting comment. No word how presale ticket refunds will be held, or if Busta has simply postponed his visit here until after his time Down Under is finished.

EDITION mixing up a ‘brew-ha-ha’

By
April 7th, 2011

If you haven't had an opportunity yet to visit the Lobby Bar at the EDITION Waikiki, now's your chance.

Sure, the EDITION's private "beach" is a pretty cool feature, and enjoying a cocktail or three out by the hotel's pool is definitely a nice way to spend pau hana. But the hotel's Lobby Bar is an excellent example of an unobtrusive room that's comfortable and welcoming, with quality bartenders serving up great drinks.

On Thursday, one of the EDITION's "star-tenders," master mixologist Christian Self (pictured), will be on duty at the Lobby Bar helping to host a specialty beer cocktails and food pairing from 4 to 9 p.m. The hotel has partnered with Singha Beer to showcase that brew in drinks mixed with ingredients like lychee, Amaretto and Bloody Mary mix.

Want to make a night of it? Come back to the EDITION on Saturday and visit Crazybox for a special full moon celebration with a live art installation by Vane Russo. The party will start around 10 p.m.

For more details about both events, call 371-4366 or e-mail sasshawaii@hawaii.rr.com.
