'Rumble' returns for 13th year
One of Honolulu's longest-running band competitions returns tonight, Oct. 8, as the 13th annual "Bud Light True Music Mai Tai Rumble" gets underway at Ala Moana Center.
Island 98.5's Phat Joe will host the nine-week battle, which has helped launch the musical careers of bands like Nesian N.I.N.E., Kawao, All Natro and 82-Fifty. Both professional and amateur musicians are invited to compete for more than $18,000 in cash and prizes, with judges evaluating each band's vocal quality, instrumental ability, delivery of selected music, emcee ability and overall stage presence. Two semifinal rounds on Oct. 29 and Nov. 26 will set up a final round showdown at the Mai Tai Bar on Dec. 3.
Along with the bands, Mai Tai Bar DJ battle champions Flip and Technique will keep the party going between sets. The competition starts at 9 p.m.
Following each week's "Rumble," stick around for live music during the "Aftershock Concert Series" with some of Honolulu's top island music and reggae bands, including Ooklah the Moc tonight and Nov. 26, and Nesian N.I.N.E. next Tuesday, Oct. 15, and Nov. 19.
Other bands scheduled to perform include B.E.T. (Oct. 22), Micah G (Oct. 29), Mike Love with Paula Fuga and Sam Ites (Nov. 5), Siaosi (Nov. 12) and Rebel Souljahz (Dec. 3).
The "Mai Tai Rumble" is co-produced by Tihati Productions and Starlight Entertainment.
