Du Vin to close Jan. 31

Longtime Honolulu restauranteur Dave Stewart will shut down Brasserie Du Vin on Saturday due to a lease dispute, according to a press release issued Tuesday.

“I am proud of the impact Du Vin has made in Honolulu, especially being part of the exciting developments to the downtown-Chinatown community in the last decade,” Stewart said in the release. “I feel we provided something innovative, yet authentic to the local dining scene.”

The former home to Harbor Lounge on Bethel Street, Du Vin opened in 2006 as a means for Stewart and his wife, Mari, to “recreate their favorite European experiences” in a 150-seat space just steps from the iconic Hawaii Theatre and a few blocks away from the crowded bars and clubs of Hotel Street. With an award-winning wine program and more than 200 bottles for customers to choose from, Du Vin helped cultivate a community of oenophiles in Chinatown much the same way another one of his businesses, Bar 35, did for beer drinkers in the neighborhood.

According to Stewart, he was unable to come to terms with the Plumbers & Fitters Local 675, which owns the building and serves as Du Vin’s landlord.

“I had hoped the property owners would give consideration (to) the value Du Vin brings to the neighborhood, that rent was paid without fail and that we have the experience of running a restaurant in the often tenuous food and beverage market,” Stewart said. “Not only does closing Du Vin affect our guests and neighbors, but it affects the 32 dedicated employees who have helped make us a success.”

While Stewart evaluates his options to reopen Du Vin in a new location, Bar 35 and Bethel Street nightclub and lounge eleven44 will remain open for business as usual. Du Vin will be open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner after 4 p.m. daily through Saturday.

Customers will have until midnight on Saturday to enjoy one last glass of wine and bid aloha to the staff.

To help lessen the sting, Stewart will say mahalo with half off all spirits, beer and wine (both bottles and by the glass), while inventory lasts.
